Dress For The Track

Dressing up for the races is not supposed to be task, it's meant to be fun!

The races are the perfect excuse for girls to dress up in a gorgeous frock and guys in a smart suit. But it doesn't stop there! Headwear has long been a tradition of racing attire, and nowadays all sorts of shops are stocking hats, fascinators, feathers and headbands - all simply crying out to be worn at the next official Fujifilm Whips n Spurs Party!

With 10 feature racedays during the summer alone, its no mean feat deciding what to wear, and when to wear it! Hopefully, the following descriptions of raceday style should help...

Dress to Impress
The traditional Fujifilm Whips n Spurs Spring Party is the perfect opportunity to splurge on the new season fashion hitting the stores in September. Think sassy yet sophisticated, sexy yet stylish. Being an indoor event you don't need to take  weather into account when frocking up in your finest AND the best news is that the best dressed guy and girl will each win a Fujifilm FinePix Z35 and prizepack from OFF Wax I Brow Bar as part of the Fujifilm Best in Show fashion competition!

Dress with a Sense of  Sophistication
Melbourne Cup Day is a day of style and elegance. Guys - a suit is a must and girls, make sure your outfit is co-ordinated from head to toe! The idea is to make sure you turn heads - whether you are at Flemington or Ellerslie for the race that stops two nations! AND the best dressed male and female on course will each win a fantastic prize package (including automatic entry in the regional final of Mercedes Prix de Fashion during Auckland Cup Week) as part of the Melbourne Cup Style Award!

Dress Up - it's Cocktail Hour!
As the sun goes down during the Twilight Summer Series, expect to see the hemlines go up! Girls - swap your hat for a fascinator and think fun and flirtation (not tight and trashy) as you hunt for that perfect little number. Guys - we expect you to look your best too! Sneakers , t-shirts and jeans are a no go, but smart pants, shoes and a shirt with an optional tie and jacket are perfectly acceptable.

  • The December event is all about the festive season - dress up for one heck of a good party!
  • In January, the Kings and Queens of racing come out to play and celebrate the running of the $1,000,000 Karaka Million - think smart and elegant!
  • February is about finding the perfect catch - make sure you've got the perfect outfit to match!

Dress it Down
Swap your fascinators for flip flops and enjoy an iconic day of top class thorougbred racing in the Ellerslie Infield on New Year's Day. Of course, hats remain a must (you'll need something to ward off those summer rays) and you might like to hide those tired party eyes with a pair of large sunnies, but it's the Fashion Police's day off and your chance to simply relax and soak up the ontrack action.

Dress For The Derby
Fashion and racing are inextricably entwined and there is no more fashionable event than Telecom Derby Day - featuring the national Fashions in the Field final - Mercedes Prix de Fashion. Throughout the world, 'Derby Day' attracts the rich and famous, all dressed to the nines for a day of elegance, opulence, style and glamour.  Among the many international traditions of a Derby Day, is the fact that all race goers are encouraged to dress in black and white. Need we say more?

Dress to Flirt
The traditional Fujifilm Whips n Spurs End of Summer Party is held on Diamond Day (AKA Ladies' Day) and is all about looking your flirtatious best! Definitely a worthwhile opportunity to hit the shops and pick out something new and glamorous so that you stand out from the crowd! OR if you're a fan of dress-ups, why not take it to the extreme and dress to theme?!
